Have Your Best Skin Ever
The 20s — Beat Breakouts
Cleansing is critical. Never go to sleep with your make-up on. This blocks pores, trapping oil inside which causes bacteria buildup and breakouts. Wash your face well with a cleanser and add a nonalcoholic-based toner to your regimen. In the morning, smooth on a light oil-free moisturizer that contains sunscreen/sunblock. For extra-deep cleaning, try facials performed in a medical setting. These are more intense than what you’ll find at a spa.
The 30s — Be Aggressive
Antioxidants like vitamin C and collagen boosters such as peptides and genistein, a new soy-derived ingredient are important. Light peels, administered under the supervision of Dr. James, help firm skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Use at home versions regularly between visits to exfoliate and further battle the onset of wrinkles.
The 40s — Lose Those Lines
Collagen production is slowing; that can mean deeper creases and enlarged pores. To combat this loss, choose products with boosters such as retinol. When washing, choose a nonfoaming cleanser and avoid bar soaps. Facials/peels and microdermabrasion should be done on a regular basis. Good homecare will be advised to you.
The 50s — Stay Dewy
Look for moisturizers that contain hyaluronic acid. It actually brings water from the atmosphere into your skin, so it will look plumper and firmer. This age is prone to redness and irritation, so we like products that include green-tea extract which soothes the skin and can help prevent skin cancer. For deep lines, Dr. James uses fillers like Restylane. Schedule regular skincare treatments.
The 60s — Tackle Sunspots & Dry Skin
Opt for thick moisturizer for day and a heavy night cream, especially for winter months and do not forget your sunblock. For sunspots, Dr. Anderson recommends getting 2 or 3 laser treatments. Spots disappear quickly and the risk of scarring is virtually zero. Facials, peels, and microdermabrasion with oxygen scheduled every 5-6 weeks and good homecare is essential.
The 70s — Soothe & Smooth
Mature skin can be tight and itchy. Choose a rich moisturizer and a very mild cleanser. Continue battling collagen breakdown with products that contain a retinoid. You may start with a prescription, like Renova, at the lowest concentration and then moving up in potency if your skin can tolerate it. There are also over-the-counter alternatives.
